CREATING A GUEST EXPERIENCE BEYOND THE STAGE::
Turning a Sign into a Destination for Every Audience

When the team behind Come Alive! (The Greatest Showman Circus Spectacular) needed signage for the Hippodrome precinct, the brief was about more than visibility. Surrounded by kilometres of festoon lighting and thousands of theatre lights, the sign needed to stand out, create a place where audiences would stop for photos, and become a meaningful part of the guest experience. We created custom illuminated signage that helped transform the precinct into a branded photo moment guests actively engaged with before, during, and after the show.

Turning a Sign into a Destination for Every Audience
"We wanted to create a location in the precinct where people could take photographs and now there are literally hundreds of people a night taking photos next to the sign. It’s become a real part of the guest experience."

— Craig Donnell (General Manager, Onstage Australia)

KEY REQUIREMENTS

For Come Alive!, the signage needed to do more than identify the show. It had to hold its own within a highly theatrical environment already filled with large-scale lighting elements, while also creating a clear and attractive photo location for guests moving through the precinct. Positioned in the transition area where audiences gather before the show, during interval, and after the performance, the sign needed to work as both a visual marker and a guest engagement asset.

There were also a number of practical and technical requirements that had to be met. The production had strict licensing conditions, which meant the logo and font treatments had to be replicated exactly. The sign also needed to be suitable for outdoor installation, with waterproof durability that could withstand exposure to changing weather conditions. On top of that, once the location was confirmed, the turnaround was tight, and the sign had to be delivered and installed in time for opening night.

CREATIVE EXECUTION

We created a custom illuminated sign designed to deliver standout visual presence within the precinct, while giving audiences a dedicated place to stop, gather, and take photographs:

  • High-Impact Precinct Presence: With kilometres of festoon lighting and thousands of theatre lights already surrounding the venue, the sign was designed to cut through visually and maintain its own standout wow factor within a busy entertainment setting.

  • Guest Photo Moment by Design: The sign was positioned in the show’s transition area, helping turn an already high-traffic part of the precinct into a natural place for audience photos before the show, during interval, and at the end of the night.

  • Exact Brand Replication: Because the production had strict licensing requirements, the logo and font treatments needed to be matched precisely. Our team carefully replicated the design so the final sign aligned with the approved Come Alive brand identity.

  • Outdoor Performance and Fast Delivery: The sign was built for outdoor use and delivered within a tight timeframe so it could be installed and ready for opening night, while still meeting the durability requirements of a live entertainment precinct.

The final result was a signage installation that not only held its own within a major live entertainment environment, but also created a branded precinct moment audiences actively wanted to engage with.

BUSINESS IMPACT

Immediate Results:

  • A real guest photo moment: The sign created a dedicated place in the precinct where guests naturally stopped to take photos, helping turn audience traffic into visible interaction with the show brand.

  • Stronger pre-show atmosphere: Positioned in the transition area, the sign helped build anticipation before audiences entered the Hippodrome, adding to the sense of spectacle from the moment guests arrived.

  • More visual impact in the precinct: Even within an environment already filled with theatrical lighting, the illuminated sign stood out and gave the production a stronger branded presence in the wider entertainment quarter.

Long-term Benefits:

  • Deeper audience engagement: With hundreds of people taking photos beside the sign each night, the installation became part of the overall guest experience rather than just a functional piece of signage.

  • A more memorable branded environment: The sign helped make the precinct feel more immersive and recognisably Come Alive, giving guests another clear visual association with the production outside the stage itself.

  • Reliable long-term performance: Despite wind, rain, thunder, and lightning in the opening weeks, the sign continued performing well outdoors, giving the team confidence in both its quality and durability.

The Come Alive! project reflects the level of precision and reliability required when delivering signage for a major live entertainment production.

This was not just about creating a sign that looked impressive. The brief came with strict creative and operational requirements: the licensed logo and font treatment needed to be replicated accurately, the sign had to be ready within a tight opening-night timeline, and the final installation needed to perform outdoors in a demanding precinct environment.

Craig shared that the Kings of Neon team gave Onstage Australia confidence from the beginning by quickly understanding the brief, moving the process forward, and paying close attention to the details that mattered. From proofing through to delivery and installation, the experience was smooth, responsive, and aligned with the production schedule.

The final result delivered on every part of the brief. The sign arrived in time for opening night, matched the licensing requirements, stood up to the outdoor conditions, and immediately proved its value as audiences began lining up to take photos beside it.

The result was a seamless collaboration that helped deliver a standout precinct feature for one of the show’s most visible guest experience zones.

CONCLUSION STATEMENT

This collaboration demonstrates how the right illuminated signage can do more than identify a venue. It can become part of the entertainment experience itself.

By creating a bold illuminated sign that stood out within a visually crowded entertainment precinct, we helped the production team turn a transition space into a branded photo destination that audiences actively engaged with throughout the night. The result is more than a sign. It is a guest experience asset that strengthens atmosphere, encourages interaction, and gives the show a stronger visual presence beyond the stage.
